Food Stamps: President Donald Trump is proposing to reform the food stamp program by slashing cash payments and substituting them food package consisting of American grown food such as “shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish”. This would be distributed to all households receiving more than $90/month in cash. These changes would reshape the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.
Who would we purchase the food from? If Trump wants to increase the agricultural output of the average family farm, it might mean the government would purchase directly from the farms. Would the government pay the market price for the foodstuffs? Could the needed supplies be effectively met by purchasing from the average family farm? How would this impact the job market and what kinds of new jobs would this add?
